Following our recent ride around the Fylde peninsular,
we decided to tackle a similar ride on the Wirral peninsular. The ride started
at Liverpool Lime St station with the intention of crossing the Mersey by
ferry. However our timing was poor and we just missed a ferry and faced
an hour's wait for the next one. Mersey rail came to the rescue to take
us to Birkenhead. The journey to Hoylake is entirely along the coast. However,
we did not see any ships entering or leaving Liverpool. The route down the
western side to Neston followed the Wirral Way - another converted disused
railway track. The journey back to Birkenhead picked out a number of very
attractive villages, complete with thatched roof cottages and pubs.
